Ok after this one I give up (not really) I have found what I consider to be an amazing FREE MMO. Atlantica Online. atlantica.ndoorsgames.com/center/default.aspWhen I followeds the various very positive links to this free to play MMO I got quite excited, even entrigued that the combat was Turn Based ( gasp!). Playing the combat in the game reminds me a lot of a game I used to love 'Magic The Gathering' and a version of it that appeared as a strategy game by a german dev... which I forget the name off. But the Universe is enormous: Player owned Towns, HOUSING, decent to good crafting...the works. I have to say despite my typical enthusiasm for new MMO's broadcast to you people regularly on this esteemed Organ (perhaps now viewed with some scepticism), I am wowed by this game (pardon the pun) and as a freebie and I suspect a game you can dip in and out of surely we can form a TLC Guild on Atlantis Online and work towards owning our own town. Afterall, as its free, except for time spent what do we have to lose? Don't take my word for it : atlantica.ndoorsgames.com/center/news/press_view.asp?page=1&list_seq=873Please giove it a go, be patient with the combat and let me know what you think.

Have had a look at the site. Looks promising. Graphics seem as good as a lot of paying games. Although the avatars are a bit "final fantasy"-ish i think i can live with them.
And i like the idea of a turn-based game. As an old fart with only 10 fingers (as oppose to a 14 year old with 18 fingers) i might actually be able to make experience and lack of motor control count.

I can update having played it for the best part of 8 hours full on last night !! (yes I look bad today) that its awesome.
Jake et al, it has so much detail and I know some of you like that level of deep complexity in your MMO's - I say it has that in spades. I love the fact that I am still virtually clueless about most of the systems 8 hours in.
On the combat, yes you are right Jake, its the first MMO I have EVER played that requires skill and tactics rather than 18 fingers and laser reflexes. It is so much like MTG but I would date to say it takes it further and with a timer per round it still has that intense MMO combat flavour. One cool feature is that the quick slots for buffs etc are limited as a solo player - my next ones only opens up if I'm in a Guild and then the next two only open up if we own a Town!
To give a flavour of the complexity, take towns: There are roaming NPC's you see from time to time around the map - some rare some less so with professions that you can get to come live in your town depending upon the power and achievements of your Guild, and these people open up new facilities in the owned towns for travellers to use. If you are not a guild member in the town you can't use some of the facilities and you pay a tax set by the guild on purchases made from the merchants, hospitals, etc. How cool is that!
One thing that is mighty friendly which I have never seen before is you can press 'auto move' to take you to the selected quest. No more wandering aimlessly for a quest NPC.
In addition to a whole host of true crafting professions which I haven't even looked at yet, all weapons can be canibalised and upgraded, so two identical swords plus a special crafting rune (a drop item) can be combined to do an upgraded version of weapon, same with armour. Skills are also cleverly implemented and tehre are at least half a dozen different skill chains for different armour and weapon classes.
They even have a mentoring system which richly rewards players for mentoring new players.
And its still only Beta. But they have said all avatar progress will be retained when they move from beta.

And the final question that is on the tips of everyone's tongues:
Can you make a pirate looking/themed character?

Guys I would like you all to give Atlantica a try. I know most of us are into pay-to play games burning a hole in our time and pockets, but as a free to play it can do no harm. Think of it as something to dip into now and again. I have created a guild called 'TLC' on Macedon Server. Its about a 2gig dl so set it off running overnight and give it a look. It would be real nice if we could from time to time bump into each other on this great game, which I think it is. Register & download here: atlantica.ndoorsgames.com/center/default.asp

I had problems with this.
It spent about an hour installing, another 3 hours patching, and then was corrupted in some way. Kept saying "Could not find file" about a variety of files, hundreds of times. When finally past this, it would consistently crash after character creation.
Looks like i'll have to wipe and try installing again.
