I'm considering asking for WAR for my birthday.
Is it worth it?
I have been reading about numerous problems with registration on EU servers - which do you have, the EU or US version? Did you have problems?
Marks out of 10 for:
Graphics Customisability Crafting Long term appeal
?
Thanks!

I'm on the US servers. WH seems to have had one of the smoother MMO launches in history.
The graphics are in the middle because most MMO publishers think it is a mistake to crank them all the way up thereby alienating tons of potential subscribers.
You would have to ask Steevo about custimization - WoW has been around long enough that you can tweek it every which way to Sunday but WH is still new, of course.
Crafting, it should be said, is kinda crap. I think they have gone more for ease of use than complexity - but on a bright note you could just ignore it completely.
It's as easy if not easier to level playing in RVR battles than doing quest - however - there are quests everywhere and so far I have yet to hit a dry patch where I would have to grind for xp.
Seems a fair rendering of the Warhammer universe. There are a few instances but that is not really the games focus. The feel of it is very similar to WoW but there is much more emphasis on Realm vs Realm.
Compared to POTBS your character abilities are much better developed and avatar combat is on par with WoW and they have added some collision detection to avatars so they can't run through each other.
The PVP is pretty robust as you can join a que wherever in the world you happen to be and after the battle is over it pops you back to where you were.
As far a long term appeal I have not gotten to the endgame but I am enjoying the ride and will probably continue to develop my character even when Lich King comes out.
Polished like LOTRO but much more lively (LOTRO was like WoW methadone), much more playable and tons more quests than Tabula Rasa and not nearly as repetitive as POTBS. And since there are some big guns behind it the chances of getting updates and big expansions (including adding back in the cities and classes they took out just before release) are good. Basically they didn't abandon a lot of good sense decisions that Blizzard made for WoW for the sake of it but added a different focus to appeal to other types of players. I suppose my big gripe is I can't get on UK servers with you guys now that I have found one I would play besides WoW.

I probably wasn't clear enough about what i meant. I don't mean modding, i mean customisation of avatars. Every game except SWG has annoyed me in that i cannot customise my avatar properly. There only seem to be a few parameters. I want to be able to adjust height, weight, musculature, every feature of my face etc. I also want thousands of clothing/armour choices. How is WAR for that?

All toons in the same class look basically the same, at least in the early levels. Ability to create your own toon's details (other than eye colour, hair, ermm..) is minimal. A Dwarf looks like a Dwarf and an Orc like an Orc...
I have read (and in closed beta when we were given templates for high level 30+ toons to play with kijnda saw) armour customization and painting gave invividuals a more distinctive look on the battlefield, but that's via clothing and trinkets essentially.
Trench's resume is accurate. I could only add a couple of points:-
Graphics - are functional and cartoony like WOW but are fine and I think fit the game theme.
Dungeon instances - Few at the start, but I understand there are more dungeon raids, both group and instanced towards endgame and especially on tier 4 (the final global RvR battle level). I am doing Gunbad on Sunday (level 24+ to have any chance in a large raid group) and am looking forward to it.
Fun and things to do - I have played so many hours; beta and open game that I daren't count and never yet had the dreaded MMO "erm what shall I do now?" moment yet.
Character dev - very good. So many attributes and systems to develop your character, more like Eve than anything else in terms of character upgrades I have come across (without the perma-running exp counter).
Crafting is a waste of time, no more than a useful diversion in R1.1.
RvR - (PvP) is superb fun. I'm not a PvP'r by instinct or enyoyment but its so well implemented you do it all teh time and enjoy it. (Its something you have to do to raise one of the two exp bars to get special renoun rewards and attributes).
Guilds - Guilds are amazing. I was forced to adopt a Guild in absense of TLC and joined a meta-society from WoW and DAoC who are amazingly well organised and teh guild levelling and reward systems are amazing. Just like a player guilds level, gain attributes and rewards. The other day we gained "Keep taking" and ended up in an enormoue RvR battle guarding our keep against the hated Destro. Eventually they stormed the keep and despite a valiant defense we were ousted. Destro are Zerg's atm.
Next level (Guild 15) we get to design a Guild logo and get a guld cloak!
This is my present MMO of choice by a zillion miles (and I wes never interested in the concept of WoW). Given teh current economic crunch it may well be by exclusive MMO for a while.
Why can't you get on a UK server Trench?

Why can't you get on a UK server Trench? As i understand it, the EU and US box sets are different, and the servers are run by different companies. To play on an EU server he'd need to buy the EU game and pay an extra subscription to the EU hosting company. Are you a goodie or baddie? Do goodies have to be of the same race to join a guild, or to meet up?

Aye, Turwhitt is right - US and UK servers are run by different companies. Total bummer.
I am actually trying one character on each side. I have a Dwarf Engineer on the Order side who can build sentry guns (like the engineer from Team Fortress!) which tickles me. He shoots guns and throws bombs but surprisingly has more in common with the Warlock class in WoW with many DOTS (damage over time) you can stack up on opponents whilst your sentry gun fires off at them.
On the Chaos side I just started a squig herder which is a little goblin with a rotund and toothy pet that bounces along side and attacks your opponents while your goblin can either melee or fire arrows at the target.
As well as learning new spells - there are 3 talent trees you can spend points in (just like WoW) depending on what you want your focus to be. Beyond that there are also special powerful spells that you can pick to use as you build morale while fighting and also you get renown points which you can put in Tactic slots that can improve your various attributes.
Besides budget - I think one reason that MMOs do not offer a ton of character customization is that very soon after you start playing your characters get buried under gear anyway. And the best way to set your character apart from others not only in looks but firepower is by having better gear - this all goes to facilitate gear lust which quite possibly is the underlying driving force behind all successful endgames. Good gear is the ultimate reward for all endgame PvP and instances (Or good ships and tech as in EVE).
However the world itself is lively and varied and I should think you would enjoy that.

all goodies and baddies on samed side - Order orDesrro can team up together. Its really the only way to win RvR as you need a ballanced group.
