Bog standard unimagiative, restrictive MMO with a bit of FPS thrown in to try and distinguish it. Yeah, but give me one MMORPG that's come out lately that isn't exactly the same. Age of Conan, Pirates of the Burning Sea, and so on-- they're all pretty restricting and lack really any form of profession/class customization. You may get a few skills that you can alternate, but at the core you're just the same as everyone else. All have lacked imagination, too. They're simply MMOs that have been rushed out onto the market. Gone are the days when a company wouldn't force an MMORPG out into the market before it's ready and would instead continue to develop it and make it better. It's no longer about making a good MMORPG, it's simply about making an MMORPG. It's about quantity now, not quality.

I think it's more than financial issues. Heck, AoC should've had more than enough money and it still turned out pretty crappy. I think the main problem is, is that companies simply don't care about their game anymore. To them it's a product and nothing more. It's not something they enjoy, it's not something they want to think about on their free time, or go home and play themselves. It's something they want to sell and than forget about. A few years ago companies cared more about their MMORPG. They would put more time and effort into it. But since than the popularity of MMOs has drastically increased, and with that the love these companies give their games has decreased greatly. They're not worried about making a great MMO anymore-- they just want to make an MMO and make some profit off of it. They're not in it to make anything great, they're simply tossing together an MMO as quick as they can because "time is money".

Unless MMO's are so profitable that all you have to do is churn one out, have it survive a year and rake in the cash and retire, ((which I dont think they are, I think they are expensive to make and launch) then this 'baby steps' era we are in with MMO's wll mature settle down and quality will return.
As MMO's are in their early days, excitement and energy seem to be overriding quality. Once the industry gets its fingers burned enough -especially the Publishers of course - and realise that the game needs a great long term model and lots of ongoing love to survice long enough to make a decent return things will improve I'm sure.

Also like many smaller companies that use, say, the Unreal engine to build their games on - a few bigger companies will offer an MMO engine for license that smaller companies will try and build their own product over. I actually read a preview of this in PC Zone around 6 months ago, it may still be there if you want to look it up. Anyways, it actually said it was looking pretty good, especially teh single player first person footy itelf which each players avatar plays using WASAD like you were playing counterstrike, making runs into space, bursts up teh wings etc. Its a true MMO in that you level stats as well and live the dream off the field. I agree with Jake, its either gonna be a blast or a blasted mess.

They haven't said when the beta's going to start though.
