I have set up Battle Tactics to be accessible only by a new Forum Grouping, "TLC Fleet Members" This means that ordinary members can't register and access our tactics as we move into the game. please do not be offended if I have missed you - it was a rough set up from the members list and my curry was getting cold - give us a shout Pirate if we have missed you out.

Aye...I be a lowly midshipmen at the US Naval Academy. I study naval combat and history. It's more of a prison then a college really...especially since I'm on restriction....a little under age drinking will always getcha...so I plan on spending a many night sitting in my room on the computer...thinking of ways to sink, plunder, and burn the Caribbean...

I was wondering if this has already been addressed: Does a "raking" broadside do significant damage to the crew, not just to the hit points/armor of the ship? I understand that the armor is much weaker in the bow and stern, but because a "raking" broadside travels all the way down the length of the ship shouldn't it kill more of the crew. Oh, and can the rudder be shot away if the stern is badly damaged? Cause that would be a great addition to the tactical application of sea battles.

Cannons can be destroyed, yes. But they can't be targetted, they're just randomly destroyed when the ship takes a certain amount of damage.
There are different types of shot-- round cannon, grape shot, ect. There are a bunch, actually. And each do different things... Round shot mainly damages the hull, chain shot mainly damages masts and sails, grape shot mainly damages the crew. While sometimes those rounds will slightly damage other components, mostly they will just damage what their "main" damage target is. Different positions wont really help, just the type of shot you're using.
The rudder, as far as I know, can't be destroyed. You can stop a ship by destroying its masts and sails, but not the rudder. If I remember correctly, there is a skill where you can jam the rudder of your enemy temporarily, but I'm not positive on that.
