Footy gets more and more visible in the States it seems but on the other hand I tend to spend a lot of time on either coast. I am sure there is a soccer fan somewhere in the middle of Montana somewhere - but I bet he is really lonely.
I get comments on my Chelsea scarf practically everyday.
Them: You from England?
Me: No.
Them: Oh.
or
Them: Manchester!
Me: Chelsea!
or
Them: Chelsea? Ain't that Clinton's daughter. What'r'you a democrat?
Me: Yes.
or
Them: Birmingham!
Me: Chelsea!
And so on. Soccerphobes are kooks and pretty rare. But the information playing field is so askew that you can have 99% of scientist say that global warming exists and 1% getting a paycheck from some ultra right organization saying it doesn't exist and the news media will portray it has an even fight.
Also I think advertisers fear the sport since it would not take well to being interrupted by commercials every ten minutes. Honestly - I don't need it to be big over here as long as I can watch it. I wouldn't want the commercial onslaught nor the American commentators who seem to have a poor grasp of the game babbling inanely into the mic.
