Ooh, an American playing fantasy footy? Sorry if this sounds patronising, but do you actually know who any of the players are?

I do! I'm a Chelsea fan because MLS is still, well, pretty boring. Honestly soccer/football is the first organized sport we usually play here in the US. I started playing football in the late 70s outside of Washington D.C. in the Alexandria Demons - then we moved overseas and rugby and field hockey soon followed. "Soccer Moms" are considered a voting force now in American politics (like NASCAR dads). There are many American's you meet in the pubs that have an astounding knowledge of the sport sometimes outdoing many of the expats in attendance. Yes we are a fringe, but so at one point were health clubs, sushi, jazz, rock'n'roll, and Shark Week. I've dropped in and out since in different periods of my life it has been hard to follow. But now with cable. ITVN boxes, the internet, and many Barnes and Nobles and Borders Books carrying World Soccer and Four-Four-Two magazines etc - it's a lot easier to keep up on things. (Back in the 70s you had to watch PBS , the Public Broadcasting System, to catch reruns of a few games and that was all you had - and real fanatics would order tapes). Also - there are pubs - and I mean PUBS all over this country now and they all show European football and in New York you can pick an ethnic enclave of your choice and watch football matches all over the world. I go to Fin McCools when I am home ( www.finnmccools.com/ ) and Nevada Smith's when in New York: www.grahamecurtis.com/nevadasmiths/index.htmlTo tell you the truth I have absolutely no interest whatsoever in American football, baseball, basketball and most especially golf. None. In fact, the only worthwhile sports in this country before the improved accessibility to football across the pond were midget wrestling and roller derby. And you know - Roller Derby is making a comeback! www.bigeasyrollergirls.com/So while I would not even come close to having the breadth of knowledge about football that I am sure a lot of the guys and gals in this forum have I do follow the sport and have enough balls to shout down the 50 plus Man U fans even though I might be one of five Chelsea fans in a place. If any of that didn't make sense (soccer moms and NASCAR dads for instance) just say the word and I or some other yank will explain I'm sure.

Me too! Interesting read. And yeah, WTH is a "soccer mom"? And on the subject of soccer moms, i was watching "Victoria Beckham - Coming to America" the other day, and she was saying how her boys always made her go in goal. My first thought was: "Kicking a ball at Victoria Beckham, very hard - that sounds like fun" My second thought: "That sounds dangerous - if you hit one of her breast implants it might explode." A double-edged sword indeed.

So it has nothing to do with football at all....

Not . . .really.
I was probably in one of the first generation of soccer playing kids in the late 70s in the US. In 1975 when Pele came to play for the Cosmos in the dying North American Soccer League there wasn't any kind of interest in football in the States at all. So whereas Pele could not save the NASL, I think his presence might have been responsible for myself being in an organized kiddie soccer league by 78-79.
Beckham has more to work with as a football ambassador since there are now stadiums dedicated to football (which NASL did not have) and I simply notice a lot more soccer jerseys being worn in this country in general these days. There is an example of football becoming much more popular in Australia recently due to regionalizing the teams and building dedicated stadiums. Also they put in a decent showing at the last World Cup which helped.
The biggest problem with MLS right now is simply - there are 13 teams. . and 50 states - so that leaves at least 31 states, discounting New England which is a regional collection of six states, with no team to root for.

Aye - poor showing at first. I have just moved from New Orleans to Baton Rouge, La. In the first week I didn't have my eye on the ball so half my team was wounded, dying, or hiding out in some South American brothel.
Grab your breeches and hoist the mainsails, indeed!
