Is there a formation we will be sailing in?

Well it probably depends on what the goal is.
If we're trying to lure a frigate, it might be best to have a lone scout who will take a pot shot at the vessel and then start running. Of course he'll be luring the victim into the centre of the wide V of ships we've set up for him.

Interesting question. Two comments for what its worth from me. One, we will, it seems be fighting in instanced zones around harbours triggered for PvP by Guilds doing PvE missions. It is therefore likely to get pretty crowded in there and pretty hairy, unless we can do combined missions (like the Corp Reseach missions Heff in Eve) and spawn a PvP area of our own, kill the merchants and get out. My point is if we do the former we may need to watch our asses. Two, unlike Ships of the Line, we won't have the range and firepower to do much with our ships, I imagine, other than close in fast, take out the sails with chain (low range), the crew with grape (low range) and then board em' (extremely low range ) Not sure what formations that means but there we go

Well, if we have time to form up, i would have thought that the satggered line formation, with the wind to port, would be the best for this. The first ship would use chain as it comes level, the second would aim to broadside, and the next ones ram.

Nice idea. we could do it with just 3 ships - if we practice early enough we could use that for a while to get a heads start in teh cash and noteriety stakes

i suggest everyone watches master & commander and /or reads Captain blood by Raphael Sabatini
Heres a review from Amazon 'Captin Blood is a brilliant book!! I could not put it down. A Doctor whos is sent into slavery for treason he did not commit, becomes a pirate and spreads destruction and despair amoung the Spanish. Yet he manages to retain his honour! It is a great tale.'
there are some great battles and tips especially on formation in Captain Blood.

I watched that Russell Crowe movie with the boats n that erm Well I cant say in my life I have ever done research in ship formations and tatics but theres no time like the present. Personally I was just gonna leave it till the game is released and experiment.

Three line staggard is a good strat. Look online and use real life naval strats of the period...there is a reason they worked then...chances are they will work for this game as well. Being well organized will always win the day against the choatic odds.

I think Sadist pretty much hit the nail on the head there but while copying the naval strategies from past times we still must keep an open mind to possible unlikey but effective strategies in the game. Because one thing that is certain in all games is the fact they never work quite as intended

Make sure we have about 6 and they are unarmed or if lightky armed send new members in first....

I think too that the Medium ships, IE frigates in numbers will overwhelm larger slower ships...think a pack of hyenas vs a water buffalo...or something akin to that. We will be able to out manuver and thus with tackt should be able to win the day. Stay away from broadsides, stay outside the arc and use the wind to our advantage.

aye outnumber em like a swarm of bees. We need to get good at steering these bloody things as well or we will get toasted in a couple of shots

It's my understanding that frigates will not be at all easy to earn. I'd think that the amount of pirates with frigates (at least for the first 6 months/a year) would be extremely small. Most likely we'll have to make do with Sloops of War and Xebecs and the like.

I think we are referring to the 'big ships' we will have to harry with our little vessels as the Frigates which the Navy will own - till we 'own' the Navy

Sounds great - First couple of "new members" head in to bait and take out sails with chain - LOL We will need a constant re-supply of ships/ repair tools & parts to replace the ones newbs lose in this tactic.
Are we gonna use TeamSpeak or Ventrillo or some form of chat in game, as I assume they won't build that in. Quick clear communication will be vital as a fleet.

I beleave thats the plan CanO, and you are right it will take a lot of communication and no fear of losing ships either. I beleive quite a few of the guys already use TeamSpeak in other games.
